Retro-Vista - a collection of postcards

A series of postcards will be produced when time permits, and these will be illustrated with blocks picked up at auctions and junk shops from across the nation. The first has just been published this October (2020).

Postcard No.1

HRG

The HRG block was discovered underneath a large pile of rubbish at Beaulieu a few years back. Incredibly, it’s a picture of an HRG Aerodynamic, a rather rare sports car. The block is a high quality copper based plate that must date back to the 1940’s - the same age as the car.

The postcard is printed in 280 gsm card. The font used is 12pt Goudy Bold Italic.

The plate has that 1940’s look: the light accentuates the shape of the car, and the wheels have that chunky look that befitted the ‘go-anywhere’ spirit of the time.

The business side of the postcard has been printed inhouse as well. The heading is in 18pt Gloucester Bold and the text in 10pt Veronese - a favourite font due to its ‘antique’ style and sloping cross-stroke of the lowercase ‘e’ .

‘Affix stamp here’ is in 10pt Imprint italic. This font was the first one produced by Monotype for mechanised typesetting, and dates back to around 1912.
